Press release: CHC attended Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL’s) Webinar on Resolving Domestic Violence: Has the Istanbul Convention had an Impact?

On the 16th of April 2021 CHC representative attended Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL’s) ‘Human Rights Webinar on Resolving Domestic Violence: Has the Istanbul Convention had an Impact’?

Over 150 participants gathered online to discuss the significant increase in domestic violence across Europe caused by pandemic and quarantine measures and lack of adequate remedies such as reporting, investigation, or providing shelter for victims. One of the main concerns of the discussion was the Istanbul Convention – the first international convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. As of March 2019, Istanbul Convention has been signed by 45 countries, however, in recent years it has emerged as a controversial issue, as some countries decided not to participate in the ratification or to withdraw completely.

During the webinar, participants discussed the current status of ratification in the Istanbul convention in their own country. The Czech Republic is one of the countries which did not ratify the Convention. Even though the current prime minister of the Czech Republic Andrej Babiš has expressed his intention to ratify the Convention, there are still voices fighting against the ratification.

Experts also shared views on the practical impact of the Istanbul Convention and talked about the ways how to raise awareness to more people about the severity of domestic violence.

CHC believes that the ratification of the Istanbul Convention will be a significant step towards the improvement of the situation in society. The convention can help us to take the issue of violence against women more seriously, protect women better and create a safer environment for them.
